Life as a languages student at Durham

Our language areas organize many activities for students. Recent activities have included Russian language performances, cooking traditional Arabic dishes and a German careers roadshow. Follow us on Instagram @durhammlac to find out more.

There are also many College and University clubs and societies catering for all kinds of interests. Durham itself is a small cathedral city, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne with the shopping centres, cinemas, theatres, bars and other facilities of a large urban centre is fifteen minutes away by train.

Two of our PhD students have received prestigious awards: Benedetta Panisson has been selected to participate in the Italian Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale and Stephanie Bernard has been awarded the 2025 Juan Facundo Riaño Essay Medal for the best essay by an emerging scholar writing on a theme of Spanish art history
